AI Search Is Changing How Contractors Get Found. Here’s What to Do
Buyers now ask ChatGPT and Google’s AI results who to call. Here’s how contractors get into those answers: rank well, answer real questions, and keep your business info consistent.
A property manager opens ChatGPT and types, “Who does commercial fire alarm inspections near me?” Three names come back. They don’t scroll through ten links. They call one of the three.
- Google says there are “no additional requirements” to appear in AI Overviews or AI Mode.
- AI tools tend to cite pages that already rank well, so solid SEO comes first.
- Clear headings with one question and one direct answer each make a page easier to cite.
- Keep your name, services, and service area identical everywhere they appear.
To get into AI search answers, do three things: rank well in regular Google results, answer real buyer questions with clear headings, and keep your business information the same everywhere. You don’t need a separate AI strategy. You need a clearer version of the one you already have. Do the basics well, and AI search follows.
A property manager who used to scan ten links might now ask ChatGPT or Google’s AI results who does commercial fire alarm inspections nearby, and get a short list of names. Here’s how to be on it. It’s the work our AI search service covers.
1. Rank well in Google first
Google says “there are no additional requirements to appear in AI Overviews or AI Mode.” The same pages that rank are the ones its AI draws from.
Outside Google, AirOps found the pages ChatGPT cited had a median Google rank of 2.5. So the basics still come first: a page per service, a strong Google Business Profile, and steady reviews. Our guide to marketing a fire alarm company walks through them in order. Do the basics well, and AI search follows.
2. Answer real questions with clear headings
Structure helps AI tools pull an answer from your page. A 2026 study of 50,000 AI citations found pages with clean H1, H2, and H3 headings were 2.8 times more likely to be cited.
Use the questions your buyers actually ask as headings, one per section, and answer each in the first sentence below it. Keep the answer in the page text, not inside an image or a PDF. Could a buyer find your answer in the first line, or would they have to dig?
3. Keep your business information consistent
Your company name, services, and service area should match on your site, your Google Business Profile, and every directory you’re listed in. When sources agree, you’re an easy answer to give. When they conflict, you’re easier to skip.
Now, add structured data so machines can confirm what your pages say. Organization and service schema are the baseline.
4. Don’t block AI crawlers
So check your robots.txt file. When did anyone last look at it? Unless you have a specific reason, don’t block AI crawlers. A tool that can’t read your site can’t cite it.
You can’t buy your way into an AI answer. You can be the one it finds easiest to trust.

Do it yourself, or have us do it
Start by checking that each service has its own page and that your Google Business Profile matches your site. Then rewrite your headings as buyer questions with a direct answer under each, and check your robots.txt.
Be wary of anyone who guarantees AI placement. Nobody controls it. If you’d rather hand this off, request the free audit below and we’ll show you what to fix first.
Start with one question
Ask ChatGPT and Google the question your best customer would ask, with your city in it. Note who comes up and which pages get cited. That’s the bar to clear. Do the basics well, and AI search follows. Then close the gap, one page at a time.
Common questions
Is AI search replacing Google?
Not yet. AI answers now sit above regular results for many question-style searches, and buyers use them. Treat it as one more place to show up, built on the same work.
Do we need different content for AI than for SEO?
Mostly no. Clear service pages, direct answers to real questions, and consistent business information serve both.
How do we measure it?
Ask new inquiries how they found you, and watch your analytics for referral traffic from AI tools. Judge it, like everything else, on qualified calls and form fills.
